Cystitis and erythromycin

Many people know all about cystitis, including its most common cause (bacteria) and its symptoms (pain, fever and even, in serious cases, blood in the urine). The most natural step to take right after you have been diagnosed with cystitis is to ask about its cure. After all, this urinary tract disease is not so much as life threatening, but it is very annoying and highly painful. Therefore, the patient needs to know what is the treatment scheme that he or she must follow.

Because cystitis is, usually, a bacterial problem, the only treatment that really works is antibiotics. Out of the multitude of antibiotics out there, the first one that was used is erythromycin. Nowadays, erythromycin comes in a lot of different brand names and in a lot of combinations with other, more powerful antibiotics. However, due to the fact that newer germs recognize newer antibiotics, physicians have found themselves having to go back to the oldies, but still goodies like pure erythromycin.

There has to be a downside to treating cystitis with erythromycin, right? Well, there is. Just like any other antibiotic out there, if given in large amounts over a lot of time, it will stop working. Two things happen here: firstly, your body develops a memory of the drug and starts to metabolize it faster then it should, not allowing the active substance to do its work. Secondly, the germs themselves will recognize the erythromycin and will create defense mechanisms against it. This is why physicians alternate antibiotics.
